Safety Coordinator Requirements

The Safety Coordinator is ultimately responsible for the safety of each ride sponsored by the Houston Area Star Rider Chapter and is assigned that position by the Safety Captain and the chapter administration. He or she carries the highest authority on the ride and can stop a rider from participating or even cancel the ride should conditions warrant it. The duties of the Safety Coordinator are as follows:

  1. Insure that the Ride Captain and Tail Gunner are familiar with the ride rules of the chapter and of the ride.
  2. Pre-plan the ride with the Ride Captain, and the Tail Gunner. Discuss road hazards, weather contingencies, rest stops, etc.
  3. Carry an emergency first aid kit on the ride. The Safety Coordinator will be considered as a first emergency responder should a rider be injured. Should be knowledgeable of emergency first aid procedures.
  4. Inquire of impending weather conditions just prior to the ride and discuss them with the Ride Captain before the ride commences.
  5. Casually inspect each bike that is participating in the ride of damage, heavy wear, part failures, etc.. to insure road worthiness prior to the ride. If a bike is found to be defective in such a way as to compromise the riding safety of the chapter, then the Safety Coordinator should notify the Ride Captain and the rider of the condition. If the defect can be repaired before the ride, then the rider can participate in the ride; if not, then the rider must forfeit the ride.
  6. Prepare a report for the administration on any action that had to be taken against a member or ride participant and / or safety issue that occurred during a ride where medical attention was required. Minor safety issues or suggestions can be brought up at the administration meetings without a report being generated.
